We look for motivated and dedicated student applicants who see the value of broader cultural understanding and personal development that is to be gained from a study abroad experience.
What We offer
For the 2022-2023 academic year, the amount of a scholarship is $8,000. The Chris Borton Memorial Scholarship is currently available to University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) students pursuing full year study abroad programs.
HOW to Apply
Students apply for the scholarship through the study abroad office of the partner university or directly through UCEAP. Further information about requirements and application deadlines is available on the partner university and UCEAP websites. Historically, application deadlines are in April or May for the following academic year.
merit-based awards
Chris Borton Memorial Scholarships are merit-based awards. We look for students who embody the mission of the Scholarship Fund: to promote cultural understanding, to foster connections and collaboration in the international community, and to support the next generation of global thinkers and leaders. It is our experience that these benefits are best obtained through a year academic long program, and this has been confirmed by many past recipients.
Full academic Year programs
We believe that full-year study abroad programs offer substantial benefits over shorter programs. A full-year abroad allows recipients to:
Immerse fully in a foreign culture
Form meaningful relationships that last a lifetime
Explore other countries during breaks
Achieve fluency in a foreign language
what we would like to know about applicants
Your study abroad office will require a standard set of documents which take care of communicating basic information such as your major and minor, statement of financial need, country of your choice etc. You are asked to write a short personal essay explaining why you are applying for this specific scholarship, why you would like to study abroad, your goals for your time spent abroad, and your overall career goals. The essay is a good place to communicate information about yourself outside the academic realm. This could include information on hobbies, previous experience abroad, jobs held, cultural interests and activities. We are as interested in why you want to go abroad and what you hope to get out of the experience as we are in your qualifications.
